Ruth Gardner – Author’s Response

My broader view of AI generated content and its role in human interactions is that it is mostly an apocalyptic force that will render humans sociopathic.

Initially as a collection of images and using my recollection of what I provided as prompt terms, I thought that the AI bots had it completely wrong. I considered that perhaps my prompts had overtones of this destructive theory as they showed a world up in smoke and that the AI bots had picked up on this.

Perhaps there was a frailty to its digital crafting and just like people, they do not always perform as expected.

I felt a resumed faith in the validity of good old-fashioned human created art – and admittedly, a slight smugness – that AI was seemingly not up to the task of delivering on my requests. Perhaps there was a frailty to its digital crafting and just like people, they do not always perform as expected.

These were the prompts that I had originally emailed through to Mitch:

1. Spirituality is a trauma response
2. The cult of busy
3. One day I will die

Seeing the disparity, I soon returned to the celebratory idea that the AI bots were in fact not as advanced as people were claiming. That the human race still has time to recover and reconnect and pull back. Nowhere in the images could I see these prompts reflected. Huzzah – I had found a chink in the AI armor!

Or, so I thought.

I double-checked my email to Mitch re-reading it to the end to discover I had in fact provided a last throw-away line that Mitch (of course) had chosen to interpret as the prompt:

I hope the bots can work it out …

Looking at these images through this lens, I realise now the bots were in fact correct and quite capable – and let’s agree, quite predictable. It was my frail (human) memory that had caused the glitch!

It made me laugh as I thought perhaps my prompt is the AI version of a self-fulfilling prophecy. And in some round-a-bout way the images have conveyed my apocalyptic view of an AI-driven human existence.

So, maybe the bots really did work it out.
