Summary Reflection
These beautiful images of teleporting Smart Plants™ reminds me of gaming and anime aesthetics. As a sister of a game developer these images shake me to my core. They are hauntingly attractive, yet at the very same time, I am repulsed by them. I never had the patience to pursue a digital art practice, so I have enormous respect for the artisans who spend untold hours creating beautiful and engaging visual narratives for game worlds. And now we have A.I. creating these images in the blink of an eye. Images so clearly based on the uncredited labour and creativity of human hands.

I assume the algorithm responded to the words ‘Muslim women’ and – like most mainstream media – associated this term with a scarf wearing, hijabi women.
This image has similar colour palette. The greyish greenish hues. Again, this face, I’d associate more so with Egyptian, North African, sub-Saharan people than Pakistani. The headscarf is worn in a similar fashion.
The face still looks digital art based. The freckles and the porcelain skin, as well as the hair strands have that high resolution digital art vibe about it.

The third image could be a person from Pakistan. I am taken aback by the real-life like quality of this image. It could be a picture of someone I know – even the glint in the eyes is so close to reality. However, where the AI failed to get it right is the top of her hair, while the intricate detailing of the scarf has a virtual-art quality to it. I suppose these are the areas where AI will improve.
The colour palette is different but there is a good amount of green in it. I wonder what is the connection between green hues and my prompt.

Very close to the second image except that she seems happier, excited perhaps. She is situated in an office space which could be an academic office I suppose. What struck me most about this image are her hands. The lines on her left hand are amazing but at the same time her fingers are muddled up. Her face is also significantly more gaunt then a real face could be. Something about the right side of her face …
Again, greyish greenish hues prevail. There are way too many pens and cups holding pens on the desk. The academic lines on forehead aren’t there yet.
What struck me most about this image are her hands.
This is a very interesting image. This person could be from Pakistan, or from Turkey, or Iran. It’s like a collage where her dress and her hair blend in with her surrounds. The background could be an art work, based on a world map of sorts. The AI has placed her hair on the top of her scarf, which is kind of funny – and similar to the manner in which she is wearing her scarf.
Again, the hands and fingers are weird! The current version of Midjourney is much better at hands, which is scary, as hands are the most difficult body part of the body to draw. I keep on being struck by the how close the eyes are to real-life. Again, similar greyish green shows up. Was this a design choice by the curator?

This image is different than the previous ones – it appears to be a lot more realistic. The person in this image is standing outdoors, in relatively natural light light and her face and body look anatomically fine. Nothing extraordinary, just a normal picture. A clever piece of AI creativity.
That said, this person could be from any part of the Middle East or South Asia. The top she is wearing, could be a Qameez from Pakistan, India, Bangladesh or a tunic from Uzbekistan or Turkey. The colour maroon is very different than the previous sombre hues as well.

This image is an interesting one, she could be from Pakistan, and she is draped in an Australian flag. I haven’t really seen anyone who was born in Australia carry a flag like this. The First Nations Australians have a different relationship with this flag. Other Australians that I know stay away from such ‘patriotic’ gestures to not be misconstrued as racist, or anti-immigrant.
Perhaps, this image shows a new immigrant to Australia. I know Pakistanis with new Australian passports celebrating Australia’s national holiday while my Australian friends and colleagues actively call out January 26 as ’invasion day’.
This image amuses me. It really is a clever, yet a very stereotypical, representation of a migrant Muslim woman. That said, on the one hand, it does present the only person who appears to be (from my limited observation) wearing a collared white shirt with none of the earlier traditional patterns visible on her clothing. While on the other hand, there is this strange juxtaposition of an immigrant proudly holding an Australian flag. This could be used as an advertisement for an immigration agency.
This image amuses me. It really is a clever, yet a very stereotypical, representation of a migrant Muslim woman.
Summary Reflection
Here is the thing about these images – none of them look like me. The third one is closest. But, then in mainstream western media, no one looks like me either. And in Pakistani media, I might have a certain resemblance with some women, but there isn’t a single character I can associate with.
So, the AI is feeding on data that lacks any solid connections with me. Supplement the AI’s desire for creativity with a graphical X-factor, and this is what you get – disconnect.
All things considered; the AI is pretty clever. The current version of Mid journey can draw hands, so it’ll be interesting to see how this evolves. And whether or not there will be images that I would see and go: “Yep, that could be me”.
