The initial image was one that was photographed by Simon McLean using a Nikon S2 camera that was built in the mid 1950s. The original photograph was introduced in the style of Patti Smith’s Instagram posts, beginning with the words ‘This is….’. And it certainly is an image of the bay created from patterns of light across the surface and textures captured by a camera on film, it is something definite.
The virtual response to the material, analogue, mechanically created image of the sun setting over Melbourne/Narrm’s bay provides a range of alternatives to the original, many of which force the light into diagonal, even zig zag patterns. These are reminders of the constant change of the intensity and direction of the illumination; it is never the same on any evening. In one of these images the illusion emerges of and from multiple light sources – multiple suns – referencing other worldly, or even planetary ecologies.

These are images that provoke a consideration of the range of hidden elements beneath the surface – shipping lanes recently trawled and deepened, the eel trails of Boonwurrung waters and their currents that support the 5000-kilometer swim towards the Coral Sea.
